Obama seeks new $10-per-barrel oil tax in budget proposal to fund clean transport

The fee is part of a broader Obama administration plan to shift the nation away from transportation systems reliant on internal combustion engines and fossil fuels.

President Barack Obama will propose a US$10 per barrel tax on oil in the fiscal 2017 budget to finance self- driving cars, public transit, railroads and other transportation improvements, the White House said.

“By placing a fee on oil, the President’s plan results in a clear incentive for private sector innovation to reduce our reliance on oil and at the same time frame invests in clean energy technologies that will power our future,” the White House said Thursday inside a statement.

The fee belongs to a broader administration plan to shift the nation away from transportation systems reliant on car engines and fossil fuels. The proposal envisions investing US$20 billion to reduce traffic and improve commuting, US$10 billion for state and local transportation and climate programs and US$2 billion for research on clean vehicles and aircraft.
